Other Self-Healing Homework and Practice
1. Exercise regularly.
Whether it is a Western or Eastern form, exercise is important. You can choose to do jogging, walking, running, swimming, tennis, a ball game, hiking, tai chi, qigong, martial arts, aerobic exercise, Zumba, yoga, whatever you enjoy.
2. Practice being positive.
It is not easy to be positive all the time, but it can be done with practice. When you have a positive attitude, people like to be with you, they feel cheerful, and they feel good when you are around. Not many people like to be with someone who is negative or depressed. You lose friends that way. When you have no friends, depression becomes more pronounced. It is like a negative circle, everything becomes worse and worse. Without a change in attitude, or a change in the way of thinking, antidepressants are less likely to be helpful.
I have seen many patients who heal at different rates. The main difference in their healing is their attitude; the way they think influences how they act. The one who is more positive heals faster than the one who is negative.
3. Avoid overanalyzing.
There are major differences between Western psychology and Daoist healing. Western psychology tries to analyze everything, looking for reasons for everything. Sometimes, when you try so hard to find a reason, or try to find the exact answer, try to be so smart, you may create an ongoing battle within yourself. You may understand the cause of the problems, but may not know how to get rid of them.
In Daoist healing and Daoist psychology, we practice letting go. Not everything is fair, not everything can be reasoned out, but everything does have a reason. Do we have to know everything? No. When we are able to let go, we feel like we just unloaded five hundred pounds off our shoulders. This may not always be easy, but it can be done with mindful practice. When you are able to do that, your spirit and energy are lifted right away.
Some people worry about things that may never happen, which is a complete waste of energy. Cautiousness is good to have, in order to deal with situations that are unexpected. But being overcautious, worrying too much, and being always nervous creates negativities and blockages in the mind and loss of enjoyment of life.
People who think too much, worry too much, plan too much, and fear too much can create stress and tension, and then trigger depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.
We cannot control everything that can happen or that has happened in the past. We cannot predict everything that may happen in the future. We can only be prepared, try to manage our current situation within our ability, and live in the moment. Overanalyzing is a waste of our energy. It’s better to preserve our energy for the important things we want to do: to strive for better health, happiness, and well-being. Then, when bad things happen, we will always find ways to deal with them.
4. Practice forgiveness.
“True forgiveness includes total acceptance. And out of acceptance, wounds are healed and happiness is possible again.
